Can Chiropractors Turn Breech Babies?
The short answer is no. However, prenatal trained chiropractors do utilize the Webster Technique which is a pregnancy based technique to balance the mother’s pelvis and surrounding tissue. In the “old school days” it was considered a technique for turning breech babies; but today, we consider that out of our scope of practice.
The Webster Technique is a gentle and specific way to adjust the mother’s spine and pelvis back into proper balance. In this balance state, the baby can do what it is designed to do, find the best possible position for itself for birth.
With the Webster Technique, prenatal chiropractors not only adjust the spine and pelvis; but, also, work with the soft tissue surrounding it-the round ligaments and iliopsoas muscles. If these tissues undergo any sort of uneven tension, it can cause tipping of the uterus; thus, causing decreased room for baby to move.
Chiropractic care benefits all aspects of your body’s ability to be healthy. This is accomplished by working with the nervous system-the communication system between your brain and body. When misaligned, these structures create an imbalance, resulting in stress of the nervous system that may affect the body’s ability to function optimally.
